Gun Control

Who are "The Left"? What is the cartoonist's viewpoint about the way people on "The Left" feel about gun control? What is YOUR opinion on this controversial issue?

  1. I agree with the cartoonist that it wasn't the guns falt that all these people got shot. It was the guy. The gun didn't pull the trigger, this mentally ill guy did. WE should't blame sarah palin or Beck. Did they give him the gun? Did they pull the trigger? No they didn't, it was all this mentally ill guy that did that. We shouldn't blame the people who just believe every one should have the right to have a gun when they didn't even put it in his hand. I am pretty sure they didn't even know him. On the other side they did give him the right to have a gun though so it can be every one who passed this law's fault to. Why are we just blaming 2 people when so many peple were for this?

  2. i think people blame beck or palin because they just dont like them. For me, i dont like palin but that doesnt mean that i blame her for what happened. But, by blaming them for something they did not delibritely do is not right. The man in the middle with the mental illness is the one to be blamed. He was the one who did this, and he wasnt influenced by palin or beck. im sure if he did not have an illness, then he wouldve never shot anyone. but, he did, and the crime shouldnt be linked to anypone else. Dont give an excuse when the facts and right in front of you.

  3. The people in the left represent the democrats who are trying to oppose the gun law. These people are trying to make it harder to have a gun. My opinion about this cartoon is the reason that the people in the left said it's not the one in the middle is because the reason for all these gun attacks is because the freedom of carrying guns, which republicans like Beck and tea party members like Sarah Palin are supporting. Without the law of having a gun at home and for regular people these attacks wouldn't happen.

  4. i disagree that people should have a gun. If it would be legal to have a gun, more accidents like this would happen.

  5. The Left is the democratic party. The left feels that it is the Republican's fault for the shooting in Arizona because they allow want to allow anyone to be able to have a gun. The Left is compleatly ignoring the mental illness as the reason. I beleave that the Left doesnt blame mental illness and just Republicans for this shooting. I Do think that we should enforce gun controle so that many mentaly ill people cant just go in to a gun shop and buy a gun to go arround killing others.

  6. "The Left" is the democratic political party. The cartoonist thinks they are blaming the republicans (who support the freedom of having a gun) for the visibly apparent fact that mentally ill people are responsible for shootings around the United States. My opinion is that it isn't always these people's (republicans’) fault (and it’s wrong to accuse them) that mentally ill people go out and shoot people, and since the United States is a free country so the republicans want to support it through no gun control. However, the government should put restrictions on who can buy guns; it should be that those that are mentally ill cannot buy a gun and guns should not be allowed in public places (this might already be a law). Another way to resolve such a problem might be for nobody to be allowed to own a gun, but guns being available for rent through the government when an official permit is issued, showing one is able to handle one and be careful with a gun.

  7. To Olivia's first comment- I think it is not just the fact that democrats "don't like" Palin or Beck for the fact they blame them for the shootings. The two(symbols of many of the republicans) support no gun control and the democrats would like an excuse to blame them for something they are against. However, it is not a very good excuse for them to ridicule the republicans and support themselves.

  8. I believe the cartoonist is trying to say that it's not necessarily Loughner's fault for the shooting, because he was mentally ill. But at the same time, he is implicating the Republican party because of their philosophy of more lenient, or lack of, gun control. Traditionally, Democrats believe strongly in gun control, so in a sense, the cartoonist is blaming Palin and Beck for the Tuscon shooting. Arizona is among one of the top five states with the most lenient gun control. In Arizona, you are not required to obtain a gun permit before purchasing a gun, and you are not required to register your gun. Loughner simply entered a Walmart and walked away with a semi-automatic pistol. Loughner is obviously someone with a mental illness. In states (like Connecticut) with stricter gun control laws, people with mental illnesses are not allowed to purchase hand guns. I believe the gun control laws should be stricter, in a sense that all states should have mandatory gun safety classes with several background checks and make gun registration mandatory, such as here in Connecticut. Even though Arizona is not the strictest, all states have federal background checks when you purchase a hand gun. However, if you are not reported to having a mental illness, such as Lougher, then what does the background check matter? There was a clear break-down in the system, which allowed six people to be killed and several injured.

  9. “The left” is a person representing Democrats. The cartoonist’s opinion is that the Democrats are blaming the Republicans for the Arizona shooting overlooking the obvious culprit mental illness. My opinion is that mental illness is the main reason for the shooting. While the partisan bickering with Sharah Palin putting cross hairs on the congressional district they were targeting in elections and Glen Beck supporting gun ownership for all might have played a small part, the main reason was mental illness.

  10. I disagree with Jacob. Although mental illness did play a role in this horrible crime, it was the people who allowed Loughner to buy the gun who are responsible. There must be a system put in place that cannot break down, to check criminal and mental health records of all people wanting to purchase a firearm. Loughner got kicked out of college for spreading rumors about the school. He was paranoid about the government and especially had a problem with Gabrielle Giffords. His friend reported him to be nihilistic and seemed to think everything was a big cover up. After the school expelled him, they did not report the incident so it never made it onto his record. However, if they had reported it, he would have never been able to purchase the gun in the first place.

  11. The artist is trying to say that the democrats, a.k.a thr left, want to blame Republican people for what happened not "mental illness."

  12. I think the cartoonist is trying to say that it is not the person who fried fault. I think he or she is saying that this problem could have been stopped much earlier on. I think they are trying to say that it is Palin's or Beck's fault, because they could have stopped this by taking away his license.
